United Airlines Goes Paperless

Even though it is great to find cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms, the airline industrys move to paperless boarding passes is making travel easier for fliers owning smartphones. United customers with web enabled devices, such as iPhones, touch screen iPods, or BlackBerrys are now able to download Uniteds mobile boarding passes.

United passengers flying inside the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands may check in for their flights via their web enabled devices by going to mobile.united.com

United customers leaving from eight U.S. airports, including Chicagos OHare and Dallas-Fort Worth airports can opt to receive an email with a barcode that stores their flight, seat assignment and gate information. Displaying this barcode replaces the need to have a paper boarding pass when going through security or when boarding.

A Government issued photo ID is still required of all passengers going through security so that travelers names on the boarding passes can be matched to IDs.

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has embraced mobile boarding passes viewing them as offering improved security. TSA likes the fact that paperless boarding passes will prevent use of fraudulent paper boarding passes.

American Airlines recently announced is adding its mobile boarding pass program to 19 airports, bringing its total to 27, with the announced intension to expand this program even further.

Alaska Airlines, Continental, and Delta are also making mobile boarding passes available to their passengers.
