Boston Latest Focus City for Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines, well known for its various cheap traveloptions, including cheapairplane tickets, and cheap vacation packages, hasannounced plans for three more routes from Boston, meaning Spirit will soon beoffering 10 nonstop routes out of the city.

The new routes out of Boston are Cleveland, Detroit, and LasVegas. Spirit claims this decision wasmade because its low fares have resonated with Midwestern travelers.

Spirits new Boston routes will commence on April 16th. The airlines daily Boston to Las Vegasservice will run year round, whereas the Cleveland and Detroit routes will beseasonal, operating through November.

Spirit will face existing airline competition on all three ofits new routes:

  • Jet Blueflies nonstop from Boston to Las Vegas. Virgin American recently commenced nonstop flights on this route, but isonly offering seasonal service that will end on April 28th.

  • Deltaand JetBlue offer nonstop flights on the Detroit to Boston route.

  • Todayonly United offers nonstop between Cleveland and Boston, but JetBlue has announcedthat it will commence service on this route on April 30th. This route will soon go from being underserved to having significant competition.

Spirits largest hub is Fort Lauderdale. Over time though it has added several focuscities where it flies between five to 15 nonstop routes. Recently expanded focus cities includeChicago OHare, Cleveland, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston BushIntercontinental, Kansas City, and Phoenix.

Spirits multi focus city approached has helped theself-described ultra low cost airline evolve into one of the countrys mostprofitable airlines.

Spirit claims that the only factor that enters into itsdecision to add new routes is whether it can provide the lowest fare and stillbe profitable. Competitor routedecisions, according to Spirit, have little impact on its decision making.
