JetBlue Adding In-Flight Wi-Fi

Airlines are increasingly recognizing that they cannot rely strictly on cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages to attract passengers. Airline customers are increasingly looking at which airlines are offering the latest technological advances that benefit passengers. JetBlue has announced its intention to create the industrys best in-flight broadband for commercial aviation.

JetBlue plans to install satellite broadband Internet and TV service on all of its 160 aircraft. This installation is planned to begin by the end of 2012.

The satellite system that will be used is the first of its kind to be used on commercial planes, according to JetBlue, and must be tested by the Federal Aviation Administration before it is rolled out fleet wide.

JetBlue currently offers live television, but not WiFi on its planes. AirTran and Virgin American now offer Wi-Fi on their planes. Other airlines, including Delta, expect to have Wi-Fi on their aircraft by the time JetBlue commences its Wi-Fi rollout.

JetBlues Wi-Fi, once installed, may allow it to keep passengers better informed of changes on the ground and possibly reroute them while they are still in the air if there will be delays or cancellations with connecting flights. There will also be more selling opportunities in the air, through passengers personal TV screens, smartphones, or laptops.
