America’s Least Civil Cities

Although cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages are available to most of the nations largest cities, visitors should be prepared in advance to deal with rude behavior in many of them.

Travel & Leisure (T&L) recently published its annual Americas Rudest Cities results based on its readers votes. New York was rated the rudest city, followed by Miami, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Boston, respectively.

T&L readers ranked 35 major American cities in a variety of categories ranging from the most pedestrian friendly streets and most reliable wireless coverage.

The most apparent trend in this years rudest top 20 cities is that the bigger the city the bigger the attitude, or at least the perceived attitude, of the locals. It is well known that big city locals tend to be very direct.

On the other hand, smaller cities often enjoy a slower pace, which may be the reason why Charleston, S.C., New Orleans, and Savannah, Ga. all ranked in the top five for friendliness. Warmer cities (in terms of temperature) may also contribute to mellower locals.

Tourists should not take for granted that assumed southern hospitality necessarily translates into civil locals. Atlanta was ranked one of the top 10 rudest cities. Somewhat surprising was that Orlando came in at # 9 in rudeness given that many outsiders thinks of Orlando in terms of Disneyworld. www.cheapfares.com
