American Airlines Upping the Ante with Premium Seats

While most people tend to limit their travel options to areview of cheap traveloptions such as cheapairplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, discounttravel deals, and cheap vacation packages, alucky few are able to fly in Business Class or First Class.

American Airlines is hoping that its amenity heavy new jetsattract corporate customers and affluent passengers on long flights. Americans new Boeing 777-300ER greetspremier passengers with soft mood lighting and an archway leading through awalkup bar.

Bose noise cancelling headsets, bed slippers, and amenitykits that include Dermalogica and Akhassa products are distributed to premiumAmerican travelers. Menus offer a choiceof four entrees and several wine and liquor selections.

Americans Business Class is more than just hot towels anda few additional inches of legroom. Madeto order sundaes are offered a few hours into long haul flights.

American received its first 777-300ER (which seats 310passengers and is its largest plane) in January 2013. The airline now has 10 such aircraft withanother 10 on order. It flies this planefrom Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, Los Angeles, and New York to Hong Kong, London,and Sao Paulo. The airline expects touse the additional planes on order to fly other long international flightswhere there is a demand for premium travel offerings.

In order to win back corporate customers lost during a twoyear period in bankruptcy court the airline believes that it is critical tointroduce new planes with premium cabins and retrofit older planes with modernfinishes and comfortable seats.

The two most important things to frequent fliers and highspending business passengers on long flights are aisle access and lie flatseats, both of which American Airlines can offer in Business and First Class inits new planes.

American is playing catch up to competitors United Airlinesand Delta Air Lines, which already have lie flat seats in Business Class ontheir long haul planes.

American is in the process of retrofitting its older Boeing777-200 planes and Boeing 767-300 planes with lie flat seats for Business Classand more legroom so that it can sell its main cabin extra seats.

Airlines have found that Chinese consumers have moredisposable income and want to spend it traveling to far reaching destinationssuch as the United States. To tap intothis demand, American will use an upgraded 777-200 on its Dallas/Fort Worthroute this fall. This plane will offerBusiness Class seats that stretch out into flat beds 6 feet, 4 incheslong. First Class passengers willreceive turndown service and pajamas.

Two meals are provided on the 16 hour flight between Texasand Asia. Premium passengers can requestwhen they would like their food served. A snack bar is fully stocked, featuring banana pudding, brownies, freshfruit and sandwich wraps. First Classpassengers are offered a wine tasting.

Amenities on the new aircraft are not solely limited topremium seated passengers, as evidenced by the following features:

  • Alltravelers may purchase Wi-Fi Internet connection.

  • Everyseat has a power outlet and USB port to charge mobile devices.

  • Allpassengers are able to access an in-flight entertainment system with touchscreen monitors and hundreds of movies, TV shows, and audio programs.
