United Reduces Miles Needed For Short Trips

As attractive as cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages are, frequent fliers have to pay attention when a major airline runs a promotion requiring fewer frequent flier miles to purchase tickets for short haul flights. United Airlines has dropped the number of frequent fliers miles customers must use to book free tickets for direct flights of 700 miles or less.

Uniteds promotion may well be in reaction to a similar American Airlines frequent flier promotion that was announced last week.

United frequent fliers will be able to get one way award tickets for 8,750 miles and round trip tickets for 17,500 miles. Usually 12,500 and 25,000 miles respectively are Uniteds lowest mileage thresholds for award tickets.

To qualify for this promotion, United frequent fliers must book their award tickets no later than August 31st for travel no later than January 7th. This promotion only applies to United and United express flights. Award tickets must be booked a minimum of seven days before scheduled initial flights.

Popular short haul city pairs that will be covered by this promotion include New York to Chicago, Washington to Boston, Los Angeles to Phoenix, San Francisco to Seattle, and Denver to Dallas/Fort Worth.
