Understanding the Limits of Full Body Scanners

Cheap airplane tickets, and discount hotel rooms are great, but travelers want assurances that airport security is staying ahead of terrorists. On March 4th, a congressman asked TSA if full body scanners are the end-all in security. The answer was mixed.

Full body scanners provide TSA officers with increased detection capability that is significantly greater than what they have at security checkpoints today, according the TSA. These scanners will not detect objects hidden in body cavities, but are supposed to be better at revealing concealed items than a pat down.

Currently, full body pat downs do not include checking sensitive parts of the body, such as where the explosives were hidden in the underwear of the terrorist who was trying to ignite a bomb on Christmas day on the Detroit bound flight.

The bottom line is today there exists that no single or combined group of actions or machines that can be purchased that will guarantee the safety of every passenger every time anyone flies. However, the goal is to progressively take additional security steps that keep our security personnel and measures ahead of the advances of terrorists.
