Tips on Staying in Shape on Vacation

After having found cheap travel deals, such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages for your next trip you do not have to resign yourself to gaining weight while on vacation.

A recent study found that 60 percent of travelers gain an average of five to seven pounds over a two week vacation.

The following are tips on staying fit and eating right while away that Smarter Travel collected from nutritionist Monica Reinagel:

Walk whenever possible vs. driving or taking other means of transit. Avoid airport malaise by walking through the terminal. Skip elevators and escalators and opt to take the stairs.

Drink smart and remember that the only bad alcohol is too much or what it is mixed with. Creamy pina coladas are often mostly made up of a corn syrup laden mix. Instead drink wine or your favorite liquor and club soda.

If staying at an all inclusive resort, eat smart. Limit yourself to the amount of food you would normally eat at home and limit the amount of desserts and carbohydrates you eat.

If you are renting a place that comes with a kitchen, the best way of keeping your eating in check is by preparing your own meals. Visit a local farmers market for fresh produce and purchase local healthful treats to snack on.

Snack often. Travelers often need a mid morning and/or afternoon snack. Protein packed snacks are best. Avoid PowerBars and other performance bars that are usually filled with sugar. Granola bars are often slathered in corn syrup, chocolate, and preservatives. The best snack foods are things like loose granola, nuts and dried fruit. These foods are rich in fiber which helps keep you feeling full until your next meal.

Carry a refillable water bottle wherever you go. Moderate dehydration tends to make travelers feel hungry when all they really need is water.

Try to stay at hotels that offer a gym or pool. If not, ask if your hotel offers discount passes to a local fitness center.

If you are on a cruise, do not go overboard taking advantage of all their nonstop eating options. Instead partake in many of your cruises activity amenities. Jogging tracks, rock walls, volleyball courts and ice skating rinks are all good ways to burn calories. Several lines now publish nutritional information for their dining room options.

Dont blow your diet on food easily found at home. Instead, splurge on local fare. Dont waste calories on something like french fries that you can easily eat at home.
