Tips on Flying with Children

You spend hours searching for cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, or sorting through cheap vacation packages finding just the right ones for your family. If you want to make your trip truly a successfully family adventure the following are some helpful tips:

Arrive at the airport at least ninety minutes ahead of your scheduled departure if you are on a domestic flight. Be aware, international flights, require earlier check in times. The last thing you want to do is miss your plane. Later flights might be hard to find and impossible for your family to sit or possibly even fly together.

If you leave your car in long term parking, know its location and the additional time needed to get from the lot to the airport. Long term parking usually is the cheapest place to park your vehicle, but it is also the least convenient and can be quite time consuming.

If possible, get someone to drive you to the airport so that you do not have to deal with the hassles of parking and can proceed directly to dropping off your luggage. If that is not an option, consider taking a taxi. Otherwise, so long as there are two adults, drop one person with the kids at the airport with the bags while the other parks the car.

Print your boarding passes and pay baggage fees online and check your bags curbside where possible. Your family is more likely to be able to sit together if you obtain your seat assignments when you first make your reservation or call the airline shortly thereafter.

If an infant is part of your traveling family, request seats in the back of the plane. If there are any empty seats on your flight, you are more likely to find them there as well as having the advantage of being closer to bathrooms.

Only carry-on the plane what you will need during the flight. You will have your hands full with your children. If possible, bring portable games, or a portable DVD player with you to entertain them.

Give your children who are old enough, responsibility for handling their own carry-on bag since this will help keep them focused and take some of the load off your back.
