Save Money When Traveling

Dont assume that the only ways to save while on the road is through the purchase of cheap travel options such as cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages. There are additional steps you can take to save even more.

Most of the following are travel money savings tips from The Daily Meal:

Instead of paying somewhere between $10 to $30 per night that many hotels change for Internet access go to Starbucks or restaurants and cafes where you can access the Internet for free with the purchase of a drink or snack.

Try to stay at hotels that offer either free breakfast or free meals for kids. Another approach is when checking into a hotel to ask to be upgraded to the concierge floor where free food is often offered throughout the day.

By staying at a hotel longer you can often realize substantial savings. A third night is free at many hotels, particularly in California and Florida.

Do not pay for water when traveling. Pack an empty water bottle and fill it up after passing through airport security. Refill this bottle as needed to drink free water throughout your trip.

Rent the cheapest car available. Often such cars are

unavailable and you will be given a free upgrade.

Figure out how to never pay for luggage when flying. Possible solutions include flying JetBlue (where your first checked bag is free), becoming an elite frequent flier, or signing up for a credit card that allows you to check bags for free.

Be willing to fly early in the morning in order to purchase the cheapest flights. 6 am flights are often hundreds of dollars cheaper than later scheduled flights.

Look into vacation rentals which often cost the same or are priced cheaper than a hotel room, and provide much more space. Such rentals often come with kitchens so travelers can save money by cooking their own meals.

Plan ahead when making your travel reservations. Hotels typically offer 14 or 21 day advance purchase deals which are 10 to 30 percent off their usual rates.

Be open to prepaying for your hotel or car reservation, depending on how certain your travel plans are, and the savings that are offered.
