Safe Vacations Easy to Find South of the Border

Some would be vacationers to Mexico would like to take advantage of their cheap vacation packages or discount hotel rooms but have been deterred because of all of the drug gang killings since 2006.

The U.S. State Department has repeatedly released statements pointing out that millions of American tourists safely visit Mexico each year. Although travel advisories have been issued for border areas and some interior areas mainly in the northwest, resort areas at not known to be suffering from serious crime.

U.S. businessmen or tourists who need to visit the northern border areas are encouraged by the State Department to be aware of their surroundings and use common sense if they are in these areas. Since 2006, the most dangerous Mexican city has been Ciudad Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua, across the border from El Paso, Texas. Over half of the Americans killed in Mexico since 2009 died in Ciudad Juarez or in Tijuana.

Resorts in or near Cancun, Cozumel and Tulum, all of which are very popular with American tourists, are considered safe and not threatened by drug gang activity. Drug gangs have been more active near Acapulco in 2011 but usually not in the resort area itself.

Tourists are encouraged not to travel alone at night, wear or display expensive jewelry, or drive off to the mountains without letting others know.
