Miami No Longer a Zika Zone But Texas Is

As hard as it is to pass up cheap traveloptions such as cheapairplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages, manytravelers have opted not to visit Miami since its South Beach was declared aZika Zone.

The good news is that the Zika virus is no longer activelyspreading in Miamis South Beach and all of Floridas Zika zones have beencleared, according to state health officials.

Miami Beach attracts millions of visitors each year withits beautiful beaches, world class hotels, vibrant restaurants, shops andevents. Lifting its Zika warning sends amessage that Miami Beach is a again a safe top tourist destination.

Despite vigorous local opposition at times, Miami DadeCounty officials deployed mosquito spray trucks, aerial fogging and hand heldsprayers to fight the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that spread Zika. Rules were strictly enforced to dump standingwater and rip out tropical plantings that could harbor mosquito nests.

The bad news is that Texas has experienced a probableoutbreak, with four new cases clustered in Brownsville. Texas officials have not formally declared aZika outbreak but say the cases are likely related. The infected reported getting sick with Zikalike symptoms between November 29th and December 1st andwere probably infected several days earlier before mosquito control effortsintensified in Brownsville.

The main risk of Zika is to babies of women infected whilepregnant. The virus can result in severebirth defects. The virus is mild andalmost undetectable in most people. Given that there is no vaccine against Zika and no treatment forinfection, the main way to fight Zika is to eradicate mosquitoes.

Florida has 249 locally acquired cases of Zika virus withmost of them sporadic and not part of any clear outbreak.

Zika is usually spread by mosquitoes and, less frequentlythrough sexual contact. While mosquitoesdo not travel far, people do and can unwittingly be infected and carry thevirus with them. If they are bitten byan Aedes aegypti mosquito, they can infect that insect and the mosquito canlater infect other people.

As of December 8th, a total of 4,575 cases ofthe Zika virus have been reported in the continental United States andHawaii. Experts believe that manythousands more likely went unreported. Zika rarely causes serious symptoms, excepts for unborn children, andmost people never know they had the virus.
