How Guests Select Their Hotels

While some travelers might select hotels strictly based on reviewing discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages, more than price goes into many peoples decisions.

A recent survey of over 1,000 people rated cleanliness as their number one criteria in selecting a hotel:

Cleanliness 43 percent

Price 23 percent

Location 19 percent

Security 11 percent

This June survey was sponsored by property and casualty insurance giant Chubb Group of Insurance Companies.

A Chub spokesperson responded to the results saying Travelers should take safety precautions more seriously, and travel security should be higher on their checklist than cleanliness. It seems that more people are concerned about housekeeping than security.

Hotel security concerns gained a much higher profile after ESPN report Erin Andrews became aware in 2010 of video taken on her naked through a hotel room peephole. Andrews was stalked and/or filmed in rooms at the Marriott Nashville at Vanderbilt University, the Radisson Airport hotel in Milwaukee, and a third hotel in Columbus, Ohio. Andrews observed that she always had the expectation of privacy once checked into her room.

Other important considerations in selecting a hotel include:

Location of your hotel. Ideally you want it to be close to whatever activities you would like to take advantage of in the area.

Hotel amenities. Use the Internet to view images of the hotels actual rooms and facilities.

Reviews and feedback on hotels. These often end up giving the most accurate picture of what you can reasonably expect during your stay. www.cheapfares.com
