Gas Prices Plummeting

Although cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages are often the means of reaching desired destinations, the recent fall of gasoline prices means that tourists who rent cars are saving even more money.

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States is $3.38, a drop of almost a dime in the last three weeks. Over the past two months gas prices have dropped an average of 46 cents a gallon.

The falling price of gas is due in part to refining problems across the country increasingly being fixed at the same time that seasonal gasoline demand is dropping. Crude oil prices have also fallen.

Hurricane Sandy played a part in the price decline because many would be consumers of gas were not able to travel as a result of the storm. Gas purchases were down in New York and New Jersey during and after the storm because many people were unable to get to fuel.

Prices are expected to drop further this month. The national average is almost 8 cents more than the average a year ago.

A survey released December 9th found that Long Island, New York was experiencing the highest average gas price at $3.85 while Memphis, Tennessee was enjoying the lowest average at $3.04.

The following are the average gas prices in other cities:

Atlanta - $3.27

Baltimore - $3.34

Baton Rouge, Louisiana - $3.11

Boston - $3.59

Los Angeles - $3.68

Salt Lake City - $3.40

St. Louis - $3.05
