Flying is Safer than Ever

As great a feeling frequent fliers have after finding cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms, it is still welcome news that there were no U.S. airline fatalities in 2010. This is the third time in the past four years there were no deaths from flying.

Never before have there been so many years with no airline deaths in such a short period. The average number of deaths fell from 86 a year in the 1990 to 46 per year since 2000, a decline of 46 percent.

2010 was the first time there were zero passenger fatalities on any airline based in a developed nation. Dozens of safety improvements have contributed to a dramatic trend toward safer skies.

U.S. airlines flew over 10 million flights last year, transporting over 700 million passengers, with only 14 passengers suffering serious injuries. There were no major accidents as defined by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The improving safety record of airlines can be attributed to scores of initiatives that have been instituted in recent decades. Some of the most critical enhancements include technology improvements that have almost eliminated collisions with ground and other aircraft, improved training, and data collection that identify problems before they cause accidents.
