Don’t Overpack

Chronic overpacking for trips can cause problems on a tripthat otherwise was planned well by carefully reviewing cheap traveloptions, such as cheapairplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages.

All is not lost. Thefollowing are tips on how to fix your bad packing habits from Smarter Travel:

  • If youare not traveling with children, your goal should be to pack no more than whatcan be packed in a carry-on that can fit in a planes overhead compartment. By packing lighter you will be able to avoidpaying checked baggage fees and stop having to waste time waiting at a luggagecarousel. Yet another plus is neverlosing your bag again.

  • Onlypack clothes that can be worn more than once. Pack clothes that can be mixed and matched and worn a few times. It is smart to keep most of your packedclothes within the same color palette so that they do not clash.

  • Youwill have a greater variety of outfits on your trip by packing more tops thanbottoms. Ideally, pack no more than oneor two pair of pants.

  • Packtoiletries that perform multiple tasks, such as two-in-one shampoo andconditioner, and a shampoo bar that also works as body wash and shaving cream.

  • Ideallylimit yourself to carrying only two pairs of shoes: one for walking and one for dress up.

  • Packas few electronics as possible, remembering that many gadgets multitask. Multiple gadgets tend to take a lot of spaceparticularly when you consider their assorted cords and chargers. Think aboutspace saving gestures such as transferring your music to your cell phone andnot taking your iPod on your trip.

  • Layout all of the clothes that you plan to take. The reality is that people tend to overpack and ultimately regretbringing certain items of clothing. Agood bet is that you will not use/need all the clothes you plan on taking.

  • Do notpack just in case items that you will only bring for a situation that is unlikelyto occur such as a dramatic change in weather. Instead if you find upon arriving at your destination that you need adramatically different outfit than what you packed, go shopping.

  • Avoidpacking at the last minute which tends to result in a messy bag, forgottenessentials, and mismatched clothing. Pack early so you have time to clean clothing you want to bring, or buysomething for the trip. Early packingalso affords you time to trim down once you start packing.

  • Onlypack the clothes you like the most. Clothes not worn at home are unlikely to be worn on vacation.
