Where to Go to Really Get Away

It takes more than just cheap airplane tickets, or cheap vacation packages to really unwind and unplug. Travelers who do not want to be reachable while on vacation should consider unplugged lodgings.

The following are some places vacationers can go to get away from tweets and instant messages and be totally off of the grid:

Petit St. Vincent is a private island 40 miles south of St. Vincent in the Caribbean. The hotel uses a color coded flag system whereby guests can make requests: Yellow indicates service is needed, red means do not disturb.

Fairmont Kenauk resort in Quebec offers solar powered cabins located on 65,000 acres of protected wilderness. One to six bedroom cabins come equipped with propane lights, refrigerator, stove, furnace and hot shower.

Rivers Inn offers five rooms and a restaurant on a bluff overlooking the Russian River and Pacific Ocean near Jenner, California. Cozy ocean view cabins come with iPhone/iPod sound systems but nothing that connects guests to the outside world.

Quincy Hotel in Washington, D.C. offers an unplugged package that includes a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble. Its guests are encouraged to buy a book, sit under a tree, and relax. Also included is a set of low tech City Walks Flash Cards with a self guided map, and a journal to cleanse the mind.

Rock Harbor Lodge in Michigan sits on a remote spot on Lake Superiors Isle Royale, sporting a car free wildlife sanctuary. It can be accessed only by boat or seaplane.
