Virgin America, well known for offering cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, is being recognized as the Americas best airline by the Conde Nast Traveler magazine. The California based low-cost airline was named the top North American airline in the magazines 2010 Readers Choice Awards.
Virgin America responded that it was humbled and honored to be named the best domestic airline by Conde Nast Traveler readers for the third consecutive year. The airline attributed its award to its industry leading service and its employees commitment to build a different kind of airline.
Rival discounter JetBlue came in second, with the remaining top 8 spots (in order) being Hawaiian, Alaska Airlines, Frontier, Continental, USA 3000, Southwest, Horizon Air and AirTran. Continental was the only legacy airline to crack the top 10.
Worldwide Singapore Airlines was recognized as the worlds top airline. Singapore has been awarded the top spot in 22 of the 23 years that Conde Nast Traveler has published its Readers Choice Awards.
The remaining top 9 spots (in order) were Etihad, Emirates, V Australia, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Air New Zealand, All Nippon airways and Japan Airlines.
Conde Nast Traveler observed that entertainment mogul Richard Branson appears to have an aerial monopoly on fun. The magazine noted that Sir Richard owns three of the five airlines that scored higher for in flight entertainment: Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, and V Australia.
The final rankings were based on almost 26,000 responses with the airlines being rated in five areas: cabin comfort, cabin service, entertainment options, food/beverages, and ticketing/ground services.
