The purchase of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages is often the smart way to plan for a trip overseas. However, if you dont speak the language at your destination, you would be wise to look into smartphone translation apps to help you communicate.
Additional words and phrases have been added to a new generation of language apps which can translate even complicated sentences. Advances in speech recognition technology has resulted in several apps allowing users to skip typing and simply dictate a sentence with the application repeating the words in the selected language immediately. Many of these apps are free.
A major shortcoming of many translation apps is they require an Internet connection to access their dictionaries. This is inconvenient for travelers unable to access free Wi-Fi or afford expensive international roaming charges.
The following are translation apps that future travelers to foreign countries would be well advised to look into before leaving on their trips:
Google Translate is free and can accept speech input for 15 languages and provide spoken translations in 23. Its speech recognition tends to be more reliable than many other apps on the market. Nevertheless, its speech recognition sometimes experiences problems especially when translating from a foreign language to English. Internet connection is needed except for saved words and translation history.
Jibbigo English Spanish Speech Translator sells for $4.99. Other languages are sold for $4.99 each. Jibbigo claims that its speech recognition adapts to the users voice. Its most significant feature is that it does not require Internet connection. Speech recognition does not appear to be as reliable as Google, at least initially.
MyLanguage Translator Pro sells for $4.99. This app can be used for 58 languages for typed input and output and 20 languages which are speech capable for output. Its biggest plus is the large number of languages it can translate, whereas it biggest deficit is its lack of speech recognition for input.
SpeechTrans sells for $19.99. It handles 11 input and 11 output languages. A free version is available for only English to Spanish translations. Its voice recognition is not as good as some of the other apps out there.
