US Easing Travel Restrictions to Cuba

In the not too distant future you may begin to see cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages being offered in the U.S. for travel to Cuba. The Obama administration is loosening Cuban travel policy to allow students and church groups to visit Cuba.

Students earning academic credit and churches traveling for religious purposes will be able to go to Cuba. The plans also will allow any American to send up to $500 every three months to Cuban citizens who are not part of the Castro administration and not members of the Communist Party.

Additional airports will be authorized to offer charter service. Currently only three airports have such service: Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City. In the future any U.S. international airport with customer and immigration facilities will be able to offer flights so long as licensed travel companies request to run charters from these airports.

These travel changes do not require congressional approval and expect to be put in place prior to the end of January.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski, the top Catholic leader in South Florida, responded positively to this change noting The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops has worked tirelessly for years with White House representatives promoting greater contact between people of Cuba and the free world.

This easing of travel is hoped to be the first in a series of steps that will ultimately lead to free travel between the U.S. and Cuba and visa versa.
