US and UN at Odds over Airplane Liquid Ban

Airline security is perhaps the one thing most travelers would agree is more important than cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages, but many travelers are looking forward towards seeing new security put in place which will allow them to carry liquids past airport security check points.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano says she is surprised by the UNs International Civil Aviation Organization being quoted saying the necessary security equipment will be in most airports soon and that the ban on liquids could be lifted as soon as 2012.

Napolitano says its too early to say when U.S. aviation officials can remove the ban on liquids passing through security check points. The technology is not ready yet, according to Napolitano, who believes that it is premature to be talking about a date to lift the ban at this point.

Passengers are forbidden to carry liquids, except for three ounce containers, past security check points after a 2006 terrorist plot to blow up trans-Atlantic passenger jets in 2006 using liquid explosives.

The European Union has announced its intention to phase out restrictions on carrying liquids onto planes by 2013 based on the belief that they will have the necessary detection equipment in airports within two years. The new technology will entail additional costs which are expected to eventually be passed onto passengers.
