In yet another challenge to cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, Americas two largest airlines, Delta and United, have increased their baggage fees.
Both airlines have announced raising their fees for checking a second bag on trans-Atlantic flights. Each airline will continue to allow passengers to check one bag for free, but checking a second bag on United will cost $70.
Delta will charge $60 if a second bag is checked online or $75 if it is checked at the airport. Previously both airlines had charged $50 to check a second bag on flights to Europe.
Delta announced that it is adding baggage flees on its Mexico and Central American flights, charging $40 for a second checked bag which was free prior to this new policy.
Delta has decided to eliminate the discount it had offered to passengers on domestic flights who checked their bags online. Delta has discontinued its $2 to $3 discount for paying baggage fees online instead of at the airport. Domestic baggage fees will stay at $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag.
Delta claimed that its decision was a competitive response since none of Deltas major competitors offered a similar discount.
