Given the popularity of cheap travel optionssuch as cheapairplane tickets, and cheap vacation packages, youmight think that wearable tech such as the Apple Watch and Google Glass has thepotential to change travel in a major way.
The ability to have keyless and cashless hotel experiencesand the potential to sync with Bluetooth for more hands off experiences appealsto many. Wearables can improve businesstravel by helping employees remain organized and fit on the road, as well aspossibly take advantage of one click upgrades and instant bookings fromwearable devices.
Surprisingly a recent poll by Airfarewatchdog of over 2,400travelers found that 69 percent of the respondents have no plans to purchase oruse wearables. Only nine percent ofthose polled showed serious interest in wearables and saw them as the next bigthing for travel.
The lack of general interest in wearable devices may havesomething to do with consumers feeling overwhelmed by all the gadget options alreadyout there and reluctant to purchase another thing that they may lose or have toworry about, whether it is the device becoming obsolete or simply keeping itcharged.
Some believe that wearable technology has yet to reach thestage where it will appeal to the masses. While most agree that the Apple Watch is impressive, it is a firstgeneration product which means that there are lags between apps and functionalconcerns that will be addressed in later versions.
Other factors holding back the desirability of wearabledevices include potential social stigma (Google Glass is not viewed asstylish), initial high pricing, and the usefulness of first generation apps.
Some experts believe that interest in wearables will grow asmore people see others adopting wearable computing in their dailyroutines. Users will be seen by othersas walking advertisements for such devices.
