Tips on Sleeping in Coach

Just because you decided to save money by purchasing cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages does not mean that you have to give up the hope of sleeping while in economy class seats.

The following are steps you can take to help prepare you to successfully sleep in coach:

Select a window seat so that you do not have someone climbing over you during the flight to get to the bathroom.

Pack gear that will help you get a sound sleep including padded foam eye shades, gel ear plugs, noise canceling headphones, and an inflatable back and/or neck rest.

If you really want to sleep during your flight, skip the meal/snack service and in-flight movies so that you can focus on quiet time.

Medication sometimes is needed. Some travelers swear by melatonin, a natural over the counter sleep aid. Others prefer taking a sleeping pill.

Air New Zealand has come up with a service referred to as SkyCouch available in April on the airlines new Boeing 777-300ER jets flying between Auckland and Los Angeles. SkyCouch offers rows of three coach seats that lean back like a recliner and come with pop up footrests.

SkyCouch seats are being referred to as cuddle class allowing two parents and a young child to stretch out in relative comfort. Cost will vary according to the price of a coach ticket, but if only two people are flying together they will be allowed to buy a third seat, if available, at about half price.

Over 30 other airlines are reportedly considering adding a cuddle class option.
