Tips on Flying with an Infant

Although cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, or cheap vacation packages are great ways to kick off a vacation, if you will be traveling with an infant you need to plan ahead to make certain you enjoy your trip.

The following are tips that help making flying with an infant easier:

Do your best to avoid flying during the busiest days of the week. If possible, schedule your flights on Saturdays or Tuesdays thru Thursdays. Added pluses of flying on these days are often fares are cheaper and planes are less full.

Request your seat assignments early and ask for an aisle or window seat.

If a baby will be traveling on your lap, it is often easier to keep your child contained in a front pack or sling for part of the flight.

Check your baggage, but, if you are bringing a stroller, use the gate check option. That way the stroller will be waiting at the end of the jetway upon arrival at your destination.

If traveling alone, but someone is available to help you to the gate, request a pass at the check-in counter prior to going through security so the other person can be issued a pass to accompany you to your gate.

Bring snacks, such as cheerios or goldfish crackers, to help keep children over the age of six months satisfied.

Pack your diaper bag wisely. Only pack the number of diapers needed for the travel day, plus a couple extra, and a small package of travel wipes. Bring a change of clothes, a blanket, and sweater or coat, if weather dictates, a couple of books and/or toys, as well as enough snacks or bottles to take care of your infant.

To prevent your child from suffering ear pain during ascents and descents encourage your infant to suck and swallow during take-off and for a few minutes prior to landing. Encouraging sucking on a bottle or using a pacifier helps stem the pain.

Ask your pediatrician whether you can give your child a dose of Tylenol or Benadryl before the plane takes off. This often helps induce sleep during the trip.

Consider buying your infant a ticket since most likely both you and your child will then travel more comfortably. Many airlines sell tickets for infants under the age of two at a reduced rate, up to half the price of an adult fare. If you pay for your infants seat, make certain to get your child a frequent flier account.
