Tips for Traveling Safely and Calmly

Although a plentiful supply of cheap traveloptions, including cheapairplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages ismaking travel more affordable than ever, a seemingly steady series of terroristattacks targeting tourist attractions and events has made travel today ananxiety provoking proposition for some would be travelers.

This does not mean that you should reconsider your travelplans. Statistics are on your side. Other causes of death while traveling, suchas car accidents, far outweigh the chances of death by terrorism. The reality is that the likelihood of aterrorist attack happening when you are traveling is very slight. Still the fear of one for some people remainvery intense.

The following are tips on how to travel safely in todaysuncertain times, according to Shivani Vora:

Relyon the State Department to determine a destinations safety and remaining safeonce you are there. Check the Departmentswebsite when making vacation plans and again shortly before departing to see ifthe security status of that destination has changed. Do not assume that a destination is unsafe ifa terrorist attack has recently happened there. Ironically, in general the security of a destination where a terroristattack has occurred is bolstered following the attack.

Avoidtourist magnets/attractions popular with tourists because these are often terroristtargets. They include large museums, buildings offering city views, and outdoor markets. Any place that draws in large crowds is apotential terrorist target. Visitsmaller museums, less known neighborhoods, and other not so touristy sights.

If aterrorist attack happens near you determine what happened and seek safetyimmediately. You are more likely to runinto trouble if you do not take quick and decisive action. If you are in a mall, head for the nearestexit or find a bathroom in which to hide. If you are in a hotel, look for exits, such as a service door, and hidingplaces such as a hotels kitchen. In acrowded area outdoors, run in the opposite direction from the commotion.

Makecertain you call for help and do not assume that help is on its way. In the past there has been no help called forseveral minutes after several attacks because people assumed that theauthorities have already been notified and were on their way. As soon as you are in a safe place call thelocal emergency line. When you speak tosomeone on an emergency line first relay your name and location so that thedispatcher will know where to send help if you get disconnected.
