Tailor Security Measures by Risk Profile

Frequent fliers who know where to go to purchase cheap airplane tickets, discount travel packages, and discount hotel rooms, are often frustrated by the extensive security procedures they are exposed to every time they pass through security checkpoints at airports.

The good news is that several airline organizations are developing proposals to expose travelers to varying levels of inspection based on the risk profile of each traveler. The Transportation Security Administration has recommended dividing travelers into three groups: trusted, regular, or risky, and applying different screening procedures to each group.

Trusted travelers would receive lighter screening, possibly only having to pass through a metal detector, leaving their shoes on, and laptops in their bags. Anyone seen as potentially risky would be subjected to more intensive scrutiny and have to pass through full body scanners and interview with security personnel trained in behavioral analysis.

The International Air Transport Association, as well as other industry organizations, is recommending the creation of a trusted traveler program that would allow passengers the option of electing to have a background check in order to be given access to an expedited security line at airports.

Fees would be charged for the vetting, similar to the $100 application fee now charged for the Global Entry program operated by the United States Customs and Border Protection. To qualify for this program, prospective members must be interviewed, agree to background checks and fingerprint scans.

Travelers not viewed as potential security risks, but not vetted to be classified as trusted travelers would receive an intermediate level of screening. Ideally their screening would take less time because suspicious travelers would be directed to a different line.

Concerns have been raised that as the economy continues to recover and passenger traffic grows that security lines will get longer which could ultimately discourage people from flying. The goal of instituting various levels of security is to speed most travelers past security checkpoints, without diminishing airline safety.
