Some Airfares are Not too Good to be True

When researching cheaptravel deals such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages priorto finalizing your travel plans, do not pass up on a travel offer simplybecause the price seems to be too good to be real.

Airlines have been known to mistakenly post fares onlinesuch that customers have found cross country flights for as little as $5. Mind you, such mistakes are rare and notalways honored by airlines.

However impossible fares are intentionally offeredperiodically such as Frontiers $19 one way deal from Chicago to Miami that wasadvertised in January. In February WOWAir promoted a $205 one-way fare to Paris for travel this spring.

The following are things to keep in mind when decidingwhether to purchase a seemingly impossible travel deal, according to RickSeaney:

  • Crazy airfares areusually one way prices. This isimportant to keep in mind since your return fare will almost always cost more.

  • Do not assume thatround trip fares will be double a one way price. While some of Frontiers $19 one way faresprices out at $38 for round trips, others were considerably moreexpensive. The one way $205 WOW ticketto Paris had select return flights that cost the same, but far more itinerarieswere offered at significantly higher prices.

  • Impossible fares areusually not offered when most people want to fly. Impossible deals tend to be in the dead ofwinter and/or on weekdays. Off peakseasons, including the January/February deal zone, are the most common time tofind such deals as well as again in late August.

  • Periodically however animpossible far will appear when you least expect it, though never overThanksgiving or Christmas. If you canfly when most fliers do not want to, you should be able to find impossiblefares so long as you keep looking.

  • Be prepared to dodgefees commonly charged by airlines that offer impossible airfares. Most impossible fares are offered by low costor ultra-low cost airlines such as Frontier, Norwegian, Spirit, and WOW, whichcharge fees for almost everything ranging from soft drinks, to bags of allsizes and even seat selection.

Rememberyou do not have to pay most airline fees. Pack ultra-light using a carry-on that fits under a seat, bring foodfrom home, and be willing to accept whatever last minute seat you are assigned, even if it is a middle seat.

  • When you come across animpossible fare, be prepared to act fast. You are not alone is looking for such fares and they are alwaysextremely limited.
