Smart Phone coming to Delta Flight Attendants

As important as cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages are, airlines are increasingly trying to positively distinguish themselves based on factors other than simply offering low prices since airlines tend to match competitors prices.

Delta Airlines has decided to issue a Windows Phone 8 device, the Nokia Lumia 8210, to its 19,000 flight attendants. Months of flight attendant feedback was used before deciding to go with this phone.

Delta believes that this phone will enhance its customers travel experience by providing near real time credit card transactions as well as allowing passengers to receive emailed eReceipts and use prepaid credit cards for onboard purchases.

Delta expects its Nokia Lumia 820 phones to, over time, retain information about individual passengers. This in turn will provide flight attendants with certain customer specific information to enable more personalized service, according to Delta.

Window Phone shipments have been on the upspring recently, but still commanded less than 4 percent market share in the second quarter of this year, with over 79 percent for Android and a little over 13 percent for iOS.

Delta flight attendants are expected to receive their customized Windows Phone 8s shortly.

The airline industry is increasingly turning to mobile devices. Allegiant Air has decided to distribute iPads to flight attendants and American Airlines and Ryanair are supplying them to its pilots.
