Six US Airlines Authorized to Fly to Cuba

While people tend to travel via cheap traveloptions such as cheapairplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages,flights to Cuba have proven elusive for most Americans because of the manyrestrictions placed on such travel by the U.S. government.

The good news is that the Department of Transportationapproved on June 10th six U.S. airlines to start flying to Cuba: American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlueAirways, Southwest Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines.

Flights to Cuba on these airlines could be available asearly as this fall and will be departing from Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Miami,Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Philadelphia.

This is the first time in over five decades that commercialU.S. flights have been authorized to fly directly to Cuba. There are nine Cuban approved arrival citiesincluding Camaguey, Holguin, and Santiago de Cuba.

There is a limited number of flights that can operatebetween the two countries. Flightapplications to Havana have yet to be approved. The Transportation Department plans to make final selections regardingflights in and out of Cubas capital later this summer.

U.S. airlines still need to get approval from the Cubangovernment before commencing flights into Cuban cities approved by the U.S.government.

America and Cuba restored diplomatic relations last summerwhich made visiting Cuba easier for U.S. citizens.

President Barack Obama was the first President to visitCuba in March of this year since Calvin Coolidge in 1928.

U.S. citizens continue to need approval to travel toCuba. The federal government has created12 travel categories that allow Americans to visit the island nation, includingfamily visits, humanitarian projects, public performances, and religious andeducational activities.

American Airlines hopes to commence flights to five Cubancities out of Miami in September. It iswaiting for approval to operate 10 daily flights from Miami to Havana, as wellas flights departing from Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles to Cubascapital city.

JetBlue has announced its intention to offer a daily flightout of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to three Cuban citiesand will allow customers to start reserving flights later this summer.
