Should Sin in Sin City be Legalized?

There are plenty of cheap airplane tickets to be found to Las Vegas as well as discount hotel rooms. As most travelers who have visited Vegas before know, there is no shortage of hookers once you get there. Some visitors wonder why prostitution is not legal in Las Vegas, since it is legal in other counties in Nevada.

Recently the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the television station 8NewsNow employed a polling firm to a survey of local Las Vegas residents to determine how they felt about legalizing prostitution and Dutch-style marijuana and hashish bars as ways to attract more tourists. Over four hundred registered Clark County voters were asked several questions.

Sixty-four percent of the respondents said that they did not want to legalize brothels in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. 79 percent said they did not want marijuana legalized. More woman then men opposed both propositions, but a majority of men came out against legal pot bars and brothels.

Las Vegas has definitely suffered during the economic downturn and some suspected there might be previously unrecognized support for legalizing certain currently illegal practices so as to attract more tourists.

Others believe that pot pubs and brothels operating in the open legally might scare off mainstream visitors that hotels and tourism officials are trying to appeal to.

Las Vegas mayor has previously discussed turning East Fremont Street into a Little Amsterdam, calling prostitution a potential redevelopment tool. He pointed out that legal brothels could generate tax revenue and improve safe sex practices by regulating it.
