Senator Schumer Continues Fighting Carry-on Fees

New York Senator Schumer wants to keep cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages cheap. To ensure this, the Senator wants passengers spending their hard earned money to be able to expect to get descent service in return that is reasonably priced without any hidden charges. The bottom line is that Schumer wants travelers to know before they purchase tickets exactly how much it is going to cost them for travel.

Senator Schumer considers carry-on bags as essential to air travel. He points out that Theres a worry, if you check your bag, it wont show up at your destination. Spirit counters that carry-on items that can fit under the seat in front of a passenger are not subject to its carry-on fee.

Schumer was one of the first politicians and most outspoken critics of Spirits announcement to charge for carry-on bags. If the Senator has his way, by officially (through legislation) declaring carry-on bags as essential an existing loophole would be closed that currently prevents the government from taxing carry-on fees.

The Senator believes that taxing this fee would create a disincentive for airlines to add this charge. Schumer has successfully pressured other airlines to commit not to charge for carry-on bags, including American, Delta, JetBlue, United and US Airways.

Not everyone agrees with the Senators position. Newspaper editorials have observed its none of Congresss business and claimed The free market is entirely capable of handling that job on its own.
