Ryanair, the Irish king of low cost carriers in Europe, is trying to come up with even cheaper cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages. Ryanair is looking at offering a standing area with vertical seats on its planes.
Ryanairs CEO has been quoted saying weve been looking at taking out the last 10 rows of seats so we will have 15 rows of seats and the equivalent of 10 rows of standing area. Ryanair has acknowledged that this idea has advanced to the point where it has had consultations with Boeing on the idea.
European safety officials have responded to the idea of standing room only passengers saying that it is extraordinarily unlikely that European safety regulators would approve of such a concept. It was also pointed out that Ryanairs vertical seat proposal has not been officially submitted. Stand up seating would necessitate changes to European rules for the certification of planes.
When contacted about Ryanairs proposal Boeing responded that it is not considering standing only accommodations and has no plans to do so. Boeing noted that stringent regulatory requirements, including seats capable of withstanding a force of 16 Gs preclude stand up seating.
Several travel experts believe that Ryanair stand up seating proposal is a hoax aimed at generating extremely valuable free publicity all over the world. Ryanair has a reputation for speculating publicly about outlandish money saving schemes.
