Recommended Airplane Etiquette

No matter how cheap your cheap airplane tickets , discount hotel rooms, or cheap vacation packages were, price matters little when the passenger sitting in front of you reclines his seat at full speed into a full reclining position. Matters only get worse if you are on a flight that serves food and the reclined seat back in front of you never moves forward once your meal is delivered.

Some travelers would like to see reclining seats banned. Ryanair has installed non-reclining seats on its planes. Presumably this was done for financial reasons since non-reclining seats typically require less maintenance. However, its passengers no longer have to worry about what people will do who are seated in front of them.

Reclining seat etiquette:

Give the person seated behind you a heads up prior to slowly reclining your seat.

Consider the size of the person seated behind you prior to reclining. Taller passengers need more room.

Consider tilting your chair back just slightly vs. going back as far as the seat allows.

If you are seated in front of seats that do not recline (such as the last row in the plane, any row backed up against a bulkhead ,the flight attendants area, or the row just in front of an exit row), it would be humane not to recline your seat.

If food is served on your plane, put your seat up as soon as food service is begun and leave it up until the food trays have been taken away.

If you are seated in front of a child, exercise extreme care when pushing your seat back.

When it comes to figuring out how far to recline your seat, the Golden Rule should apply: do unto your fellow passenger as you would have him do unto you.
