Rebuilt JFK Runway Re-Opens

As much as travelers appreciate cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, many feared that the closing of JFKs major runway for a $376 million renovation would cause havoc at that airport and have a rippling flight delay impact across the country. In retrospect the biggest complement that can be paid regarding this renovation is that most travelers flying out of Kennedy International Airport did not notice that its largest runway was closed for four months.

Runway 13R-31L reopened on Monday and when open handles a third of the airports air traffic. Many travelers and more than a few travel experts feared delays and runway traffic jams at one of the nations busiest hubs while this runway was closed for repairs. JFK officials have announced that the number of delays during construction remained relatively flat to last year, when almost one in every five flights departed late.

The runway repairs are supposed to ease delays at the airport as well as save millions of dollars going forward in maintenance. The forecasted life of the rebuilt runway, the second longest in the country, is 40 years.

This runways newly widened span now has room for the most advanced airplanes in the world. Its murky asphalt surface has been replaced by vivid white concrete. Concrete is a more long lasting substance than asphalt. However it is not usually used for runway rehabilitations because it takes much more time to install.
