As good as snaring cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages makes a traveler feel, the glow is quickly diminished if that passenger is unable to exit the plane upon arriving at the planned destination. Ginger McGuire fell asleep during a flight between Washington and Philadelphia that landed at 12:30 am on Tuesday, 5/25. She was still asleep when the plane landed and the passengers and crew disembarked.
Four hours later a cleaning crew discovered this passenger and alerted the Transportation Security Administration which then detained and interrogated her.
McGuire described waking up on an empty plane and not being able to leave as horrifying. United Airlines and Trans State Airlines, the airline operating the United Express flight that McGuire was on, are investigating what happened. Prior to departing a plane a flight attendant is supposed to complete a sweep of the airplane to make certain that no passengers remain, according to Trans States. It is trying to determine whether that procedure was in fact followed after this plane landed.
United Airlines announced that it is working with Trans States to determine how a passenger could be locked on a plane and remedy the situation with the passenger.
McGuire has filed a lawsuit requesting between $25,000 and $75,000. She alleges negligence, infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment and breach of contract.
Her lawyer has raised the question if his client could fly asleep on a plane and go undetected how difficult would it be for someone who is really trying to go undetected?
