2013 is a great year to take advantage of cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages to visit many a destination around the world. However, there are some destinations that you should wait to visit until they become safer.
Haiti is a Caribbean island known for its beautiful beaches. Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Some previous visitors of Haiti think of the country as idyllic. Unfortunately today it is plagued by crime, cholera, damaged infrastructure, and limited police security and medical resources.
Haiti is still trying to recover from a magnitude 7 earthquake three years ago that demolished much of the already impoverished nation killing over 300,000 people. Americans have been victims of murder and kidnapping. There have even been attacks on arriving tourists that have occurred immediately outside the Port-au-Prince airport.
Syria is home to some of the most dramatic ruins and landmarks in the Middle East. Unfortunately, according to the U.S. State Department, no part of Syria is immune to violence. Americans are encouraged not to visit Syria and any American in the country is being urged to leave immediately.
Both anti government rebels and the Syrian government are using deadly force including aerial bombing of civilian areas, armed clashes between government and opposition groups, and the arrest, detention, and torture of individuals.
Syria today is considered to be one of the most dangerous places on earth. Once in the country it can be difficult to find a flight out or to cross into neighboring countries such as Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.
Though both Haiti and Syria are well worth visiting, currently neither can ensure tourists safety.
