It is amazing how many travelers will spend plenty of time finding cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, or cheap vacation packages and then wait until the last minute to pack. Often such travelers end up bringing, and paying, for clothing they didnt need while others discover upon arriving at their destinations that they forgot to pack necessities such as underwear or toothbrushes.
The following packing tips will help your trip go more smoothly:
Create a packing list with six columns: One piece (such as dress or bathrobe), tops, bottoms, shoes, underwear, and all else. Below each category list the items you want to take.
Pack two or three complementary colors that can be accessorized with accent pieces. The goal should be that every item you pack can be worn with something else in at least two ways. Easy care fabrics and knits are ideal because they do not wrinkle.
Select a suitcase that will easily accommodate everything on your packing list. If you will be checking bags, review in advance your airlines dimensions and weight restrictions (usually 50 lbs) to avoiding paying expensive fees for overweight or oversized luggage.
Leave some wriggle room in your bag so that you are able to pack souvenirs purchased on a trip.
Place footwear in cloth shoe bags, packing them at the bottom of your suitcase. If using wheeled luggage, the bottom is where the wheels are. Otherwise the bottom is where the hinge is. Fill your shoes with socks.
Layer your clothes by weight. Fold pants in thirds and lay them flat as your first layer. Fill the corners of your bag with soft rolled items such as underwear, pajamas, and scarves.
Place any liquids you will be checking in waterproof pouches and then place each pouch in Ziploc baggies as extra protection against leakage. Pack your liquids as far away as possible from your clothing.
Do not place any valuables such as expensive jewelry, cameras, and electronics, in a checked bag. Never pack any prescription medications in your checked bags.
