Older Americans Increasingly Traveling Abroad

Given the availability of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms as well as cheap vacation packages, retired U.S. citizens with time on their hands are visiting foreign countries in growing numbers.

The U.S. Department of State encourages potential travelers to do the following prior to traveling overseas:

Apply for a passport at least three months before your scheduled departure date. If you already have passports, check their expiration dates. Some countries require that passports be valid for six months after your scheduled return date. Also find out if you will need a visa.

Determine if the local topography or climate may cause you any difficulties. People who are sensitive to high altitude, air pollution, humidity or other conditions that may be experienced at their destination should consult their physicians. Check to see if any natural disasters commonly occur at your destination.

Pack sensibly since you do not want to have to lug around more than you need. Dress conservatively so that you do not attract the attention of thieves or con artists. Be aware, casual clothing may result in being barred from some tourist sites. Include a change of clothing in your carry-on bag in case your checked luggage is delayed.

Travel smart and be aware that strenuous physical activity during travel can be taxing and marked changes in diet and/or climate can have serious health consequences.

Leave emergency contact information regarding your destination, a detailed itinerary, and a copy of your passport biodata page with family, colleagues or a friend. Emergency contact information for your family at home should be taken on your trip.

Consider registering your emergency contact information online with the State Department so that your information is stored securely and the State Department, your family or friends can contact you in case of emergency. www.cheapfares.com
