Now There’s an App for Bedbugs

Experienced travelers are no longer satisfied simply with the purchase of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms. They have the audacity to want to stay in lodgings that are free of bedbugs. Bedbugs are as likely to be found in luxury hotels as in very cheap hotels.

With all the recent publicity about bedbugs being found in hotels many travelers would like to know in advance whether a hotel, theater, or restaurant is infested.

Well now there is a new Bed Bug Alert app ($1.99 at itunes.apple.com) that shows users a GPS Google enabled map that indicates nearby bedbug infested locations.

The bedbug infested sites are indicated with red push pins. Locations are based on addresses of bedbug outbreaks reported by the media, government agencies, and by users across the country.

Once the app has been activated and its map loaded on an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch screen travelers wanting to avoid bedbugs can zoom in on a pin for more information. If the push pin indicates a public facility, such as a hotel or theater, the name will appear.

Users who encounter bedbugs are able to immediately report it via the app.

The app also includes a tab that links to bedbug maps in the Top 10 infested cities, of which New York, Philadelphia and Detroit rank first, second and third, respectively.
