Most Challenging Airports to Connect Thru

Finding cheap travel options, including cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages is the rage these days. However, if the only way to snag one of these deals is by connecting through airports well known for delays, then you should do your best to have as much time as possible before you have to make your connecting flight.

Select U.S. airports historically run late more often or have more missed connections than others. The following were the major airports which experienced the worst connections in 2011:

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport had less than 79 percent of its flights land on time, defined as within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time. Perhaps the only good news for late arriving passengers was than almost 20 percent of the airports flights did not take off on time.

Washington Dulles International Airport had over 21 percent of its flight arrive late, while a little more than 21 percent of its departures were delayed.

Ronald Regan Washington National Airport had over 22 percent of its flights land late with almost 18 percent leaving late.

Philadelphia International Airport experienced almost 24 percent of its incoming flights arriving late and over 21 percent of its departing flights leaving late.

Chicagos OHare International Airport had almost 25 percent of its flights land behind schedule and recorded the third worst record for departures in 2011, with delays running almost 26 percent.

New Yorks John F. Kennedy International Airport had almost 25 percent of its flights land late and over 22 percent left late. Frommers cited the airports Terminal 3 as the worst single airport terminal in America pointing to its utter lack of food and shopping options as well as its general lack of cleanliness.

Logan International Airport had over 26 percent of its flights not arrive on time and over 21 percent of its flights delayed.

New York LaGuardia Airport ran almost a delay rate of almost 28 percent and a departure tardiness rate of well over 22 percent.

San Francisco International Airport experienced delayed flights almost 29 percent of the time and almost 24 percent of its departures ran late.

New Jerseys Newark Liberty International Airport ran the worst on time rate of any U.S. airport in 2011. Over 33 percent of its flights arrived late and over 27 percent of its departing flights left later than scheduled.

The two most regularly delayed flights in the United States both originated out of Newark. Each flight went to Atlanta during rush hour. The average delay was one hour and 21 minutes. Both flights were delayed between 50 percent and 60 percent of the time.
