Mixing Work with Pleasure on Vacation

While cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages often provides the means of taking a vacation travelers sometimes find it challenging how to enjoy that vacation while still staying in touch with the office.

The following are tips collected by NBCs news travel team from some tech savvy travelers as well as business travel experts on how to stay efficient on the road and yet still enjoy a vacation:

Pre-schedule a few tweets. Text more often than email. Vacations should be about compartmentalizing and time shifting. Only glance at email a few times. Do not carry your cell phone, but leave it within earshot.

Bring a smartphone and a small tablet on vacation, leaving everything else at home. Bringing fewer devices helps you find balance. Limit yourself to one prescheduled hour a day, if needed, to work.

Schedule time to check email during dead times when your family is not available such as when kids are napping or involved in an outside activity or when everyone is in a car listening to audio books.

Avoid the impulse to respond to every email as soon as it arrives. Schedule a couple of times each day to check email or receive calls. Other times turn your phone to airplane mode and switch your email to manual sync mode.

Do your best to unplug completely when out of the office. If work is mandatory, schedule all meetings and calls for a two hour time span at the beginning of the day so that you have the rest of the day to relax.

Bring multiple devices so that you have a backup if needed. Bring your laptop to the lobby bar immediately before dinner and answer work emails while enjoying a cocktail.
