Given the ready supply of cheap traveloptions, including cheapairplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, itis surprising to learn that almost half of Americans are not planning a summergetaway.
Forty-three percent of Americans will not be taking asummer vacation according to a survey conducted in May by The AssociatedPress-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The main reason, cited by 49 percent of non-vacationers, was thecost. Another 11 percent said they areunable to take time off from work, and 3 percent said that they do not likebeing away from work.
Forty-one percent of those surveyed who work full or parttime said that they do not receive any paid time off from their employers touse for vacation. Younger and lower paidworkers are more likely not to be offered any paid time off.
Most respondents use at least part of their paid time off,but many leave paid vacation days unused. 14 percent of workers with paid vacation time plan on not using any ofthe days off they have earned. Only halfof those with paid vacation time used all or most of the days they were entitledto last year.
Not everyone wants to take vacation time during thesummer. 15 percent of those not taking asummer getaway say that it is because they already took a vacation this year orwill be traveling later in the year.
Americans say that they value time over luxury whenvacationing. Almost two-thirds said thatthey would prefer to take a longer but less luxurious vacation vs. one that isshorter but more luxurious.
Over 40 percent of the respondents said that they do notview visiting family to be a true vacation. About 75 percent consider a long weekend away a vacation.
