Make Travel Resolutions This Year

Cheap travel options, such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages all help make travel more affordable. However there are additional steps you can take to make travel more rewarding.

The following are travel resolutions recommended by Erin Gifford a writer for NBC News:

Learn the local language of a foreign destination by signing up for an immersion program, such as Coeur de France Ecole de Langues in France and Scuola Verde LOlmo in Italy. Such programs offer participants classes, meals with local families, and language instruction as part of the daily life in a small town where almost no one speaks English.

Maximize the value of potential travel points/miles. Not all points or miles are equal since many have different values, uses, and rules. Most people find that the best reward programs are the ones than offer either more points per dollar spent or require fewer points to redeem rewards and are flexible.

Consider volunteering as a family while on vacation. This is a great way to re-connect with family members. Some cruises have started offering guests the ability to spend a few hours working at local food banks or homeless shelters. International Volunteer HQ and Project Abroad place thousands of volunteers in developing countries every year.

Resolve to see more than the airport, hotel and conference room or convention center on your next business trip. Often taking in a citys top sites can be accomplished in well under three hours. An iPhone app called It Happened Here uses built in GPS to detect your location and shares historical events, memorable movie scenes, and famous crimes that occurred close by. Triposo is another app to consider that takes your location as well as local weather and time of day into consideration when making suggestions.

Be open to traveling alone. Solo travelers do not have to be really alone unless they want to. There is always someone to talk to, eat with, and explore with, if desired.

Consider doing something active. Races provide opportunities to meet locals and visit areas that are not seen on a typical vacation. Snorkeling is another great activity.

Keep sustainability in mind when traveling. Opt for a mobile boarding pass. Carry a reusable water bottle and try to support local markets and artisans. When possible, select eco-friendly accommodations.

Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and go somewhere completely new and unknown.
