Implications of Diminished Domestic First Class Seats

You might think that if you are one of the vast majority oftravelers who prioritize finding cheaptravel options, such as cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages thatthe fact that domestic first class seats is a dying business should not concernyou.

Mind you, not all first class airline seats are falling bythe wayside. The latest lie-flat seatson coast to coast routes are remarkable. On trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacificflights, first class seats by Emirates and Singapore Airlines are trulymemorable.

The same cannot be said for first class seats on domesticflights that are not coast to coast. Premium seat legroom is decreasing, with amenities disappearing, and superiorservice seriously lacking.

The reason everyone should be concerned about decliningdomestic first class seats is because if the airline industry cannot get firstclass right, imagine what it will be like for the rest of us sitting in coach.

In the good old days (before airline deregulation in the late70s) domestic first class seats used to come with luxury amenity kits packedwith gear, over the top service on even quick flights, and lots of personalspace.

Some airline insiders argue that there are good reasons forabandoning a true first class experience on domestic flights. Supposedly the economics simply do not makesense.

From a passengers perspective though first class representsthe best an airline can do. What do thereduced circumstances of first class say about what economy class passengerscan expect?

Frequent domestic first class fliers have observed a significantdecline in service and amenities in the recent past. Seats are less comfortable. The amount of legroom is not much more thaneconomy class seats used to have prior to deregulation. Gone are higher end wines and gourmet food.

By offering such a diminished experience on domestic flightsin first class, are airlines setting up the rest of us to expect even lessgoing forward in coach?
