Hilton Plans Improved Disabled Accessibility

Disabled travelers are often like everyone else when it comes to looking for discount hotel rooms or discount travel packages. However the pleasure in finding great deals is often diminished later when they stay at hotels that are not accessible to disabled visitors.

Last week the Justice Department and Hilton Worldwide arrived at a precedent setting agreement regarding the enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which will result in cutting edge accessibility changes being made to approximately 900 Hilton brand hotels throughout the country.

This agreement will resolve a lawsuit filed against Hilton for violating ADA procedures. Prior to this agreement Hilton Worldwide was being investigated for a series of violations of the ADA by its owned, managed, joint venture, and franchised hotels.

Under the joint agreement Hilton will:

Survey and bring into compliance with specific ADA rules, all owned and joint venture hotels built after 1993, including providing accessible rooms with roll in showers and tub seats.

Require owners of franchised and managed hotels built after 1993 to survey their hotels for compliance with ADA provisions and take the appropriate steps, where needed, to bring the hotels into compliance.

Build all future hotels so that they comply with ADA provisions.

Give its staff ADA training.

Hilton operates a number of different hotel chains including Doubletree, Hampton Inn, Hilton, and Waldorf-Astoria.
