Airline phone apps are going a long way to enhance trips that begin with the purchase of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages. Currently passengers are able to check in to flights, download boarding passes, select a seat, and monitor upgrades via apps.
Airlines are increasing their investments in mobile capabilities to reduce passengers frustration in moving through airports and improving in flight experiences.
Soon travelers are expected to be able to rent cars, pay baggage fees, and find the nearest airport bar though smartphone apps.
Delta Air Lines is focusing on improving its mobile functionality. Although Delta passengers are unable currently to make flight reservations via their smartphones, the worlds largest airline is one of only a handful that enables customers to adjust travel itineraries via their mobile devices.
Delta passengers who miss connections can immediately rebook different flights and download replacement boarding passes while still in the air.
Delta is believed to be close to releasing a new app whereby customers will be able to track their checked baggage. Eventually Delta customers are also expected to be able to search and make hotel and car rental reservations from mobile devices.
GuestLogix has come out with an airline app which it recently pitched airlines that will not only allow passengers to access itinerary details, but also functions as a one stop shop where passengers will be able to make in flight purchases, including food and drink, and reserve ground transportation, as well as make dining and entertainment reservations.
Airline apps are expected to eventually offer customers the ability to sign up for standby upgrades and pay for checked baggage.
Apps are not expected to replace websites as the primary source where travelers make airline reservations.
