After the purchase of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages the last thing you want to do is board your flight feeling lousy because of what you ate prior to your departure.
The following are foods travelers should never eat prior to flying:
Fried or fast food can be responsible for heartburn or an upset stomach. Eating saturated fat can constrict blood flow which in turn increases a flyers risk of Deep Vein thrombosis (DVT). Digestion in general becomes more difficult once in the air.
Alcohol contributes to dehydration. The air passengers breathe on planes is not humidified which also contributes to flyers becoming dehydrated. While alcohol may help some flyers be more relaxed they tend to come off flights feeling parched and miserable. Alcohol has a bigger impact on people at high altitudes.
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower can increase bloating while flying. The air pressure in a cabin decreases after takeoff, resulting in cabin air expanding by about 30 percent. This can result in passengers swallowing air and gases which in turn leads to the small intestine expanding resulting in an uncomfortable, bloated feeling.
Carbonated beverages including soda and beer often contribute to bloating.
Sugar free gum and candy typically contain artificial sweeteners that can cause bloating, gas, and have a laxative effect.
Many types of beans and other legumes naturally contain indigestible complex sugars that can result in onboard bloating.
Garlic is loved by many a food connoisseur but tends to linger on a persons breath and in his/her body odor. Even if you have brushed your teeth before boarding, once eaten, you exhale a garlic smell that seeps out of your pores.
Airplane provided water, ice, coffee, or tea is potentially risky. EPA tests conducted a couple of years ago found that one out of every seven planes had tank water that did not meet federal standards and contained bacteria like E. coli. Only drinks served from containers that still have factory seals on them should be consumed.
