Flying with Weed Can be Tricky

While cheaptravel options such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages oftenmake travel affordable, travelers are sometimes faced with a delicate decisionwhether to travel with weed when it comes to flying home to a state where potis illegal from a state that has legalized cannabis.

Although U.S. states are increasingly legalizing marijuana,it remains illegal at the federal level.

Many regarded the news as major when it was announced thatpassengers can pack pot in their carry-ons when flying out of the Los AngelesInternational Airport, with no more than 28.5 grams of marijuana and eightgrams of concentrated pot for personal use.

Where it gets tricky is that while recreational pot islegal in California and can be brought to LAX, TSA agents are federal employeeswho may confiscate your pot while going through security or call local policewhen you land if your destination is in a state where possession of marijuanais illegal.

Planes in American airspace are subject to federal law, sofines may still be imposed regardless of whether state authorities decide to prosecute.

It is misleading to think that you can safely fly out ofLAX with weed. If TSA agents find pot inyour carry-on it will likely result in the pot being confiscated or even in thepassenger getting delayed at checkpoint and missing his or her flight.

TSA officials are not pleased with having to deal withpeople traveling with pot because it is regarded as a waste of their agentstime. TSA is much more concerned aboutfinding weapons and identifying other security risks. Pot is not a security risk, and therefore nota major priority.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the future withinternational and domestic travel in Canada given that weed was legalizednationwide on October 17th.
