Fliers Not Turning Off Digital Devices

While many people choose to fly because of cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, a surprisingly high number of them to choose to ignore flight attendants requests to turn off electronic devices prior to take off and landing.

Airfarewatchdog, a travel website, recently polled 1,200 of its website visitors regarding their in flight behavior when told by flight attendants to turn off all electronic devices. Although almost 75 percent of the respondents said that they take such announcements seriously, 24 percent acknowledged that they do not always do as they are directed.

Of the 24 percent that they do not comply with airline rules:

12 percent said they finish a call/email/text before complying.

9 percent said they ignore announcements to turn off all electronic devices.

3 percent said they miss the announcement.

The direction to stow all electronic devices prior to takeoff and landing is not simply a request by flight attendants. Federal regulations require passengers to do so.

Actor Alec Baldwin made headlines last December when he was escorted off of an American Airlines flight for refusing to power down his iPad. Baldwin claimed that he was so captivated by a game of Words with Friends that he could not make himself turn off his device.
